 Miley Cyrus’ vulgar and obscenely sexualized performance at MTV’s Video Music Awards—in front of more than 10 million viewers, in a program marketed to pre-teens, teens and young adults—has been widely criticized as degrading both the performer and the audience that watched it. But, in reality, the real story is that so much of what was celebrated at the awards ceremony generated little commentary at all, let alone outrage.

A much-beloved Protestant hymn asserts, “This Is My Father’s World.” The song has a beautiful melody, and the sentiment is tempting. Yet, the reality of the matter—as so pointedly shown by the many sudden and destructive events caused by natural disasters—is that our world today is not our Father’s world.

What if we could travel through the microscopic world and enter the amazing environment of a single, solitary, minuscule human cell—just one of the trillions in your body? What an amazing world of wonder we would encounter! There, within this infinitesimally small and elegantly ordered domain, we would see complicated molecular machinery busily carrying out the functions that make our lives on earth possible! Traveling to the heart of the cell—its nucleus—we would find the “brains” of this invisible, unfathomably small world: an incredibly thin, unbelievably long strand of atoms that form a molecule, the existence of which is truly a miracle.
