Many have heard about the hundreds of thousands starving in South Sudan, the world’s youngest country. But few realize how this severe famine is impacting surrounding nations. According to a Vox report published on June 1, 2017, “South Sudan isn’t the only country in the region facing mass starvation. A potentially historic famine is also threatening Nigeria, Somalia, and Yemen.
Last week, another terrorist attack hit London. Three terrorists hit multiple targets, killing eight people and injuring 29 others (10 are in critical condition), as they used a van and knives to terrorize Londoners (BBC, June 12, 2017; The Guardian, June 7, 2017).
Cutting-edge British research published in the prestigious journal Archives of Toxicology reveals that maternal cigarette smoking damages the livers of unborn fetuses. “Scientists found that the cocktail of chemicals in cigarettes is particularly harmful to developing liver cells… Smoking cigarettes, which contain around 7,000 chemicals, can damage foetal organs and may do lasting harm” (BBC, May 29, 2017).
