In the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia, ethnic forces from a neighboring region, apparently allied with Ethiopia’s Nobel Peace Prize-winning prime minister and troops from neighboring Eritrea, may be committing serious atrocities.

The U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan was criticized by global leaders and President Biden’s own party, but its ramifications go well beyond politics. The region has been a quagmire for other nations for nearly two millennia. In recent times, Britain tried to control the nation three times over the last 100 years. Russia also tried to subdue Afghanistan three times, from 1939 to 1979.

Globally, the Israelite-descended nations—the United States, nations deriving from Britain, and many nations of western Europe—are actively promoting their “liberated” views on morality. These once-conservative nations, which based many of their moral values in the Bible, have rid themselves of this supposedly antiquated text and its moral teachings—going so far as to pressure other nations who do not want to adopt their new “liberating” values.

Some in the European Union have wanted an EU army for nearly two decades, but this ambitious goal has been fraught with setbacks. Now, as the Afghanistan situation deteriorates and EU ministers sense what they see as a betrayal by the United States, the chaotic exodus in Kabul could become a catalyst to finally push the creation of that army. Many Europeans appear to be concluding that America no longer “has their back.”
