What do you fear?

We are living in frightening times. Events taking place in our world today give people many reasons to be fearful.

Our end-time generation faces the prospect of imminent calamities, on a global scale, unlike anything mankind has seen before in all of history. "For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect's sake those days will be shortened" (Matthew 24:21-22).

In Revelation 6:1-8, Christ reveals four horsemen and the devastating effect they will have on humanity. The Apostle John saw, in vision, a white horse – its bow-carrying rider given a crown and going out to conquer.

The world's theologians commonly confuse the rider of this white horse with the returning Christ, who in Revelation 19 is pictured coming on a white horse whose rider is called Faithful and True. This horseman of Revelation 6 actually represents false religion – the root cause of all of mankind's many ills. "Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. But he who endures to the end shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come" (Matthew 24:11-14). If we are faithful followers of Christ, we will endure all things, as we fearlessly preach the gospel until our Lord returns.

What should we fear? We need to fear going "off track" spiritually. We do not want to be like the many who have ceased to love – and obey – the commandments of God. If we stay close to our Father and our Elder Brother, we will not need to fear any of the four horsemen of Revelation 6 – the white horse of false religion, the red horse of war, the black horse of famine or the pale horse of death, who have the power to kill "with sword, with hunger, with death, and by the beasts of the earth" (Revelation 6:8).

If we truly love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, and with all our strength (Deuteronomy 6:5), and we love our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 19:19), we need not fear any of these horsemen, because our Father will protect us. Is there anything else we should be afraid of? "For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. Anyone who has rejected Moses' law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? And again, 'The Lord will judge His people.' It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God" (Hebrews 10:26-31).

Those who have tasted God's good gifts, but have rejected them and returned to Satan's world, are in grave danger of losing out on eternal life. Now that is really something to fear!
