The bees came uninvited and built their nest inside the wall behind the chimney, a few feet from the kitchen door. It wasn't the first swarm to take up residence in the walls of the old house during its hundred and twenty year's life time. What was significant was to see wild bees at all!
European honeybees were brought to the Americas by early colonists who wanted them not only for the honey they produced, but for their ability to pollinate many kinds of fruits and vegetables also brought from the old world. Today, fully one-third of our food crops depend largely on pollination by honeybees for a satisfactory yield. If something were to happen to the honeybees, our current way of life would be in danger!
Well, something deadly is happening. Honeybees have been almost exterminated during this decade by the efforts of an invasive insect, the Tracheal Mite. Pollination of wild and domestic plants has suffered because of the shortage of healthy bees. Now a new scourge has begun to eliminate the remaining bees!
According to an article dated Feb.19th, 2007 in the Times of London, "Hundreds of millions of honeybees have vanished in 22 US states, leaving keepers financially crippled and jeopardising £8 billion [$15,645,120,000.00 worth!] of crops that need the insects for pollination. Beekeepers report their hives emptying within days because of an unexplained phenomenon known as colony collapse disorder (CCD), which drives swarms spontaneously to abandon their homes and disappear to die".
Unlike all other diseases of honeybees, CCD does not produce dead or dying bees in the hive. Bee-keepers and scientist alike are baffled. The bees just fly away, never to return. Also strange is the fact that ants or bees from other hives do not show up to steal the unguarded honey left in the abandoned hives. This behavior has never been observed with any other cause of hive death.
What does this all mean for you and me? In the Bible are prophecies dating back 3500 years which tell of a great nation, the greatest nation the world would ever see, and their kinsmen, the greatest commonwealth of nations which would ever exist.
Because of their crimes and sins against God, these peoples – undoubtedly the United States and the British-descended nations – are prophesied to suffer a great collapse of their food supply as one of the events leading to their ultimate downfall. The loss of pollinating insects in addition to drought and other causes will leave us in a terrible position:
Leviticus 26:19-20 says, "I will break the pride of your power; I will make your heavens like iron and your earth like bronze. And your strength shall be spent in vain; for your land shall not yield its produce, nor shall the trees of the land yield their fruit." And verses 27-29: "And after all this, if you do not obey Me, but walk contrary to Me, then I also will walk contrary to you in fury; and I, even I, will chastise you seven times for your sins. You shall eat the flesh of your sons, and you shall eat the flesh of your daughters."
Other Bible prophecies show that fully one-third of our people will suffer disease and starve to death!
I have left the wild bees alone in the wall of the old family farmhouse. I hope they may live, to repopulate the woods and fields around the old place with fresh new hives of bees. Then the apple tree and the pear will once again produce abundant fruit for both man and birds. But as a people – unless we repent – we are in for calamities on a scale to compare with what has struck the honeybees!
