As the Roman calendar rolls forward another year, folks pause, if ever so briefly, to contemplate where they have been and where they are going. Uncertainty and unease about the future can be very unsettling. What will the new year bring? What can you expect in your life and on the world scene in the next 12 months?
Did you know that you can actually know the big picture of what will unfold as the days and weeks go by in the coming year? That's right! You can be prepared for what lies ahead for you, your family, your friends and your business associates. I can tell you what the new year will bring. How can I do that? Do I have some special gift for foretelling the future? Actually, no, I don't. But there is a book that does give the big picture, and reveals some of the details of the future.
Of course, I am referring to the Bible, which states: "We have also a more sure word of prophecy..." (2 Peter 1:19, KJV). There are some things we can count on. Anciently, God said, "While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, and day and night shall not cease" (Genesis 8:22). This means that no matter what happens, the pattern of seasons set at creation will continue. We can depend on it. Yet, as human beings, we can expect some bumps in the road. The patriarch Job, one who "shunned evil" and who endured incredible hardship and personal loss, wrote: "Man who is born of woman is of few days and full of trouble" (Job 14:1).
So, what will the coming year hold for you? You can count on having opportunity mixed with adversity. Good things will come to you, so enjoy them to the full. But don't be taken by surprise when adversity, unexpected difficulty, trials and tests come your way as well. This is the human condition, as the world goes its own way without the Creator God of the Bible.
Jesus Christ told His followers on more than one occasion, "See that you are not troubled" (Matthew 24:6). He also said, "Today's trouble is enough for today" (Matthew 6:34, NRSV). If we are seeking the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, as instructed in Matthew 6:33, we can know that God will provide for us.
As we see what has been described as a "Clash of Civilizations" unfolding day by day, it is comforting to know that there is a great master plan being worked out for the benefit of all mankind. Only God can solve the myriad of problems we see all about us. The prophet Isaiah wrote, "For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this" (Isaiah 9:6-7).
God will take away all the problems and establish His peaceful and equitable rule over all the Earth. Then your future will hold only opportunity, with no adversity against which you will have to contend.
