Since the end of World War II, the United States has been the predominant world superpower, with seemingly unlimited economic and military might. But with prosperity and dominance came a letdown of personal moral standards.
As the decades unfolded, more women began to work outside the home as the demand for employees affected the structure of families. Most households became dependent upon two incomes. Education was gradually infiltrated by ideologues who embraced a secular philosophy, devoid of the foundation laid by the Holy Bible. Divisive political philosophies and racial tensions eventually replaced public education’s basic mission of teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic, resulting in miseducation and indoctrination.
Young men and women, products of that corrupt educational system, were sent to military conflicts in faraway places like Korea and Vietnam, then later Iraq and Afghanistan. These inconclusive conflicts resulted in devastating loss of life and horrific injuries, fomenting disillusionment in younger generations. Activists, infiltrated by anarchists, fomented civil unrest.
Deficit spending to support “safety net” welfare programs, financing foreign wars, and a transfer of wealth to support unsustainable “green energy” programs have incurred trillions of dollars of debt, staggering for even the world’s wealthiest nation. The status of the U.S. dollar as the world’s reserve currency is openly questioned. All the while, the collapse of biblical values and a series of questionable court decisions have allowed formerly illegal sexual perversions to become civil rights, disrupting society and deeply dividing the country.
As the nations of the world observe the United States of America, they see a country that will not control its southern border, cities racked by uncontrollable violence, allegations of racial extremism, and tens of thousands of deaths due to illegal drug overdoses. Add to this the stark political divide, and the result is chaos.
Historically, the societal conditions described above have occurred before, with disastrous results. During the period of the Judges in ancient Israel, “everyone did what was right in his own eyes” (Judges 17:6). 2 Chronicles 28:19 describes a time when God “brought Judah low” because of “moral decline.” The Psalms describe the problems resulting from national sin: “You make us a reproach to our neighbors, a scorn and derision to those all around us. You make us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples. My dishonor is continually before me, and the shame of my face has covered me” (Psalm 44:14–15). Proverbs 14:34 proclaims, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.”
The United States of America is becoming irrelevant as a political and military power on the world scene, but this slow-motion descent into irrelevancy is not a surprise to those who understand God’s word. It was predicted in several detailed Bible prophecies.
In Leviticus 26:1–12, the God of the Bible promises blessings of peace and prosperity for the nation that obeys His commandments. However, in verses 14–16, He states, “But if you do not obey Me, and do not observe all these commandments, and if you despise My statutes, or if your soul abhors my judgments so that you do not perform all My commandments, but break My covenant, I also will do this to you….” He then lists curses involving terrorism, disease, crop failures, and military defeat. Then, in verse 19, He states, “I will break the pride of your power.”
Deuteronomy 28, a parallel account of these blessings and curses, states in verse 16, “Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the country.” Verses 19–20 state, “Cursed shall you be when you come in, and cursed shall you be when you go out. The Lord will send on you cursing, confusion, and rebuke in all you set your hand to do… because of the wickedness of your doings in which in which you have forsaken Me.” Those who watch world events realize that this is happening to the United States.
The answers to the problems of the U.S. and the entire Western world are not political—they are spiritual. Unless genuine national repentance occurs, the precipitous decline of the U.S. will continue.
While one cannot change an entire country as an individual, one can make personal changes and a commitment to obey God. Such changes will bring a profound peace of mind and reveal a purpose for living that will bring great reward in this life—and in the life to come at the return of Jesus Christ.
