Two-Speed Europe Involving the Pope?

The concept of a two-speed Europe is back in the news again (Wall Street Journal, March 2, 2017). This week Joseph Muscat, the Prime Minister of Malta and current EU president revived the call for a two-speed Europe where nations ready to move forward without the others can do so! At the same time, he called for greater involvement from the Roman Catholic pope in determining the future Europe (EU Observer, February 27, 2017). Mr. Muscat noted that the pope’s “insight will be extremely important for Europe’s future… [He] is the ultimate world leader who has the skills and vision to say things that transcend banalities” (ibid.). As confidence in the EU wanes at home and abroad, EU leaders are looking to the Roman Catholic pope to “provide things other politicians miss” or cannot provide (ibid.). The London Daily Express noted the appeal to Europe’s religious roots and ran a headline “Divine Intervention! EU leaders will turn to the POPE over plans to revive struggling bloc” (March 1, 2017).

The Bible predicts that a strong spiritual leader will work alongside a charismatic political figure to play a major role in the end-time configuration of European nations known in the Bible as the beast (see Revelation 13 and 17). The growing populist feelings against the EU are nudging Europe’s leaders to look in another, and potentially significant, direction.
