You may have seen the news – a new satire about God being developed by the Comedy Central channel. It's a cartoon called "JC", short for Jesus Christ. A recent Washington Post article of May 6 reports that this new cartoon show is "about Christ trying to get out from the shadow of his 'powerful but apathetic father' so He can lead a typical New York life" ("Comedy Central: No to Muhammad – but Yes! to Jesus").
Other articles give more detail about how this show will poke fun at both God and Jesus Christ. Why is it that men must portray God or Jesus Christ as idiots and buffoons, in television and movies? Have you ever thought about that?
It's not a new idea. The ancient Greeks and Romans portrayed their gods as lustful, greedy, conniving, fornicating, and murderous. In effect, their gods were mirror images of men, with all the same carnal nature and problems.
Maybe that's the problem – many people don't seem to grasp that God is not like man. He thinks on a different plane than we do. Isaiah 55 reveals this, in vv. 6-9
"Seek the Lord while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, And the unrighteous man his thoughts; Let him return to the Lord, And He will have mercy on him; And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon. 'For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,' says the Lord. 'For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.'"
God does not think like us. All the problems that come from human nature – influenced by society and Satan the Devil – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, that's not of God. That doesn't come from Him. He is holy, and has a totally different way of thinking. And it's the height of disrespect to portray Him as a fool.
Our society is going to reap horrendous dividends for not fearing and respecting God in the right way. Calamity is coming; the Bible clearly shows that.
You can write to the Comedy Central producers to express your disgust for their disdain towards God. You can let them know you don't think it's funny to make fun of the Being who created us, gave us life, and shed His blood so that we might be delivered from our own sins. You can express outrage that they would treat our loving Father and our Savior, Jesus Christ, with such low regard and disrespect.
But what is the most important thing you can do? If you are upset by the continued decline in morals and values in America and around the world? You can change yourself. You can be different. You can set the example. You can seek God, and learn to raise your level of thinking to His level, instead of dragging Him down to the dirt. You can hold God and Jesus Christ in awe, and begin to obey them wholeheartedly in every thing you do. And you can get involved in the work God is doing to help others hear and understand this message as well.
Jesus Christ warns us in Revelation 18 to reject this world and be different. John records in vv. 4-5:
"And I heard another voice from heaven saying, 'Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues. For her sins have reached to heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities.'"
God is patient, but there's coming a time when His patience with a stubborn and insolent world will run out. And He will correct His children, as any loving Father would.
Let's get our houses in order now. Let's show respect and awe and proper godly fear to our Father in heaven, and our Savior who gives us life, and who wants to share His Kingdom with us forever.
