History, Science and Faith

The one key element that other so-called religious texts do not hold up to is prophecy. The Bible has prophecy that has been fulfilled in ancient times, where secular history undeniably substantiates the Bible’s authenticity; its correctness. The prophecies about cities, kingdoms and rulers from long ago can be proven by historical fact.

Our free booklet, The Bible: Fact or Fiction? written by Douglas S. Winnail, states: "The remarkable fulfillment of hundreds of specific predictions, recorded centuries earlier in the Hebrew Scriptures, demonstrates beyond a reasonable doubt that Jesus was the prophesied Messiah of the Bible and the Son of God."

Anyone trying to prove who God is and if the Bible is truly His inspired word needs more than "sentimental feelings or blind faith." God is alive and is in control of present and future events. Through the pen of the prophet Isaiah, God thunders: "Show the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that you are gods ... indeed you are nothing, and your work is nothing; he who chooses you is an abomination" (Isaiah 41:23–24).

Scripture boldly asserts that "the word of our God stands forever" and "the word of the Lord endures forever" (Isaiah 40:8; 1 Peter 1:25). Bible prophecy is not just about ancient history. Events happening today were predicted in the Bible. The books of Daniel and Revelation predicted and continue to predict what has happened and what is now happening on the world scene and will happen in the near future.

Even the modern nations of Israel, the United States and Great Britain, to whom God gave the birthright and the blessings through Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (the sons of Joseph; Genesis 48:8–20) are in dire straits, as God removes His protection. Down through history, God has used prophets to tell His people what would happen to them—in ancient times and now in the present "modern times"—if they obeyed or disobeyed Him.

The science of archeology helps prove the accuracy of the Bible. In the last several hundred years, "diggings" in and around the Holy Land confirm many historical events that are told in the Bible. Cities, nations, kings, the common man, geological findings written about in the Bible are being proven accurate, giving validity to the Bible.

Yet, in these modern times, scoffers abound. Prominent writers, scholars, scientists, as well as theologians are disputing the authenticity of the Bible. The word of God is under attack like never before!

This is where "faith" must come to the forefront of a Christian’s belief. Hebrews 11:1 says: "Now faith is the substance [realization] of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." In these modern times, a Christian’s faith is certainly to be tested. Yet, God does not expect us to have "blind" faith; to "just believe" because that is what we are supposed to do. 1 Thessalonians 5:21 says this: "Test all things, hold fast what is good."

The Bible is the authoritative word of God. History proves this, as well as science, yet, for those of us who call ourselves Christians, we must have a deep sense of faith that God’s word is true and unyielding; that God is working in our lives so that someday, in the near future, He will be able to look at each of us and say, "Well done, good and faithful servant" (Matthew 25:21–23).
