The uses of words in our language changes and evolves constantly. Our burgeoning technology brings with it new words, some of which seem meaningless. Who knew what a “selfie” was until the ubiquitous smart phone made digital cameras and the transmission of photos so popular—particularly in conjunction with social media and YouTube, where one’s everyday activities are shared with the world? What else has changed?
There is an expression that is commonly used today that was once considered a vulgarism. Surprisingly, it is now openly used by men and women to describe someone who is attractive in a sexual way. A provocative or revealing dress or a flirtatious look or comment will often elicit the exclamation, “Wow, she’s hot!” Or women, describing an attractive man, whether it be an entertainer, an athlete, or a person who makes a dapper appearance will comment, “Oh yeah, he’s hot!”
While I might be considered old fashioned, I find this kind of comment in public discourse improper and demeaning. It has become commonplace, as such expressions that start in the “hip” crowd often do. Why would I find it offensive? There is a very good reason. Jesus made something very plain when He said “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matthew 5:27–28). Lustful thoughts are sinful, according to Jesus Christ.
Is what we say important? Again, Jesus makes it plain: “But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned” (Matthew 12:36–37).
Society today has become very sexualized, and it begins at a very young age. At every turn in advertisements, entertainment, on the Internet, etc. sexually oriented material is used to sell products and services of every description. We are all affected by this constant exposure. To further complicate matters, the promotion and acceptance of homosexuality, transvestitism, and other behaviors prohibited by the Bible are now commonplace. This situation was clearly prophesied by the Apostle Paul when he wrote to the Church of God at Rome; “For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in them the penalty of their error which was due” (Romans 1:26–27).
But, some will say, “the Bible teaches that ‘God is love,’” referring to 1 John 4:8. That is true, yet obedience to His Commandments is required (1 John 2:4). While He is eager for all to come to the knowledge of His Truth (1 Timothy 2:4), He will not be patient forever.
Notice this plain description of what will finally happen to the incorrigibly wicked that refuse to repent of their sinful ways. “He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death” (Revelation 21:7–8).
For those who want to avoid this “lake which burns with fire,” which truly will be “hot,” there is a Way of life that brings peace of mind and happiness in this life, and prepares one for the glorious life to come in the Kingdom of God to be ushered in at the return of Jesus Christ.
