Teach Your Children About the Bible

Later, as the years passed, we discovered—usually with great disappointment—that these were just “stories” and were not real at all! They were just “make believe.” Yet even after learning that these stories were not true, they still bring a “soft, fuzzy heart-warming” feeling to many an adult heart. Even so, many of us passed on these same stories to our children. I, too, told my children many stories, myths and fairy tales.

Before the birth of my fourth child, God opened my mind and I learned—to my amazement—that God was real! So, I turned from telling my children myths and fairy tales, to telling them Bible stories. I told those stories with enthusiasm! The Bible stories were exciting, and I assured my children that these stories were really, absolutely true—not “make believe” or fairy tales!

Over the years, I had many family Bible studies with my children. They were a lot of fun. The children themselves prolonged our discussions with their many questions! It was an exciting time of discovery!  

It was stimulating!  There are many exciting Bible stories—true, real and full of meaning!

One favorite is the story of Samuel, with whom God began to deal when Samuel was just a child: “And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. So he arose and went to Eli, and said, ‘Here I am, for you did call me.’ Then Eli perceived that the Lord had called the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, ‘Go, lie down; and it shall be, if He calls you, that you must say, “Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears.”’ So Samuel went and lay down in his place.  Now the Lord came and stood and called as at other times, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ And Samuel answered, ‘Speak, for Your servant hears...’” [Samuel listened and obeyed God]. “So Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel had been established as a prophet of the Lord” (1 Samuel 3:8-11; 19-20).

Not only does the Bible contain so many wonderful and true stories; it actually commands us to teach them to our children! “Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. And teach them to your children and your grandchildren, especially concerning the day you stood before the Lord your God in Horeb, when the Lord said to me, ‘Gather the people to Me, and I will let them hear My words, that they may learn to fear Me all the days they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children’” (Deuteronomy 4:9-10).
