“More than 170 people have been killed and 200,000 displaced by torrential rain and flooding in Malawi. Large areas in the south are underwater and homes, crops and livestock have been washed away” (BBC, January 19, 2015). Drinking water sources have been either submerged or contaminated and officials fear an outbreak of cholera (ibid.). “The Malawi Defence Force has reportedly rescued at least 4,000 people, but there are fears that many more still need help” (Al Jazeera, January 19, 2015). More excessive rain is anticipated as a tropical cyclone arrives this weekend (ibid). Across the border severe flooding has also impacted Mozambique where the president has now asked for urgent international assistance (BBC, January 19, 2015).
The devastation and destruction in Malawi and Mozambique should be gut-wrenching to watch. Severe weather is prophesied as one of the signs of the end of the age (Luke 21:8-11). It is also sad to see that corruption of government leaders likely also plays a role in the lack of resources available to the people (Al Jazeera). Thankfully the Bible reveals a coming time when God will give “rain in its season” (Leviticus 26:4) and when people will no longer suffer major emotional trauma—from losing a home or a loved one (Revelation 21:4).
