In his 2012 Christmas speech, Pope Benedict XVI reiterated the long-standing Catholic view that heterosexual marriage is the only godly union. “When such commitment [heterosexual marriage] is repudiated, the key figures of human existence likewise vanish: father, mother, child—essential elements of the experience of being human are lost” (Reuters UK, December 21, 2012). He also described how homosexual marriage threatens the family “to its foundations” and called for a coalition of religions that oppose homosexual marriage.
Responding to the speech, a leader of Italy’s “gay” community called the pope’s words “great foolishness” stating, “Where gay marriage has been approved, there has been no consequence on heterosexual marriage” (ibid.).
Although much Catholic teaching rests on tradition rather than the Bible, the standing on homosexual marriage is biblically accurate. Scripture reveals that God’s ways will be considered as “foolishness” by a deceived world (1 Corinthians 1:18, 25; 2:14; Revelation 12:9). The Apostle Paul states that individuals not led by God’s Spirit cannot and will not be subject to the laws of God (Romans 8:7-8). God is allowing human beings to go their own way to learn important lessons (Proverbs 14:12).
