A recently discovered strain of the sexually transmitted infection (STI) gonorrhea could be even more deadly than AIDS. The HO41 strain has great potential for disaster, according to William Smith of the U.S. National Coalition of STD Directors (Science World Report, May 6, 2013). The new strain has the potential of putting an infected patient “into septic shock and death in a matter of days,” making it far more deadly and aggressive than AIDS (ibid.). In addition, there is no defense against it, as current antibiotics are ineffective (ibid.).
One public health official recommends “People need to practice safe sex, like always… Anyone beginning a new relationship should get tested along with their partner. The way gonorrhea works, not everyone knows they have it. And with this new strain it’s even more important than ever to find out” (Fox News, May 5, 2013). A group of scientists is requesting $54 million from the U.S. Congress to fund research for a new antibiotic (ibid.).
Ironically, the cheapest and most effective preventative for the new gonorrhea strain was released nearly 4,000 years ago. God commanded that sexual relations should occur only within a monogamous, heterosexual relationship—marriage (Exodus 20:14). Although socially ridiculed today, this basic, inexpensive and powerful public health statute has the potential to totally eradicate STIs! If this fundamental biblical principle were actually followed, the $54 million requested to treat an easily preventable disease could be used for another purpose!
