“The number of wild animals living on Earth is set to fall by two-thirds by 2020, according to a new report, part of a mass extinction that is destroying the natural world upon which humanity depends. The analysis, the most comprehensive to date, indicates that animal populations plummeted by 58% between 1970 and 2012, with losses on track to reach 67% by 2020. Researchers from WWF [World Wildlife Federation] and the Zoological Society of London compiled the report from scientific data and found that the destruction of wild habitats, hunting and pollution were to blame” (The Guardian, October 26, 2016).
The Bible reveals that God charged human beings with the task of being good stewards of His creatures (Genesis 1:28). The Bible also contains specific guidelines for the proper treatment of animals and sound principles of wildlife management (e.g. Deuteronomy 22:6-7). Mankind has violated these basic laws and defiled the earth and is destroying its creatures (Isaiah 24:5-6; Hosea 4:1-3). However, Jesus Christ will rectify this situation at His return (Revelation 11:18) and will set about to restore the bounty of the earth (Isaiah 11:6-9; 35:1). Today, the whole creation “groans and labors with birth pangs together until now” (Romans 8:22). In the coming Kingdom of God, humanity will learn to take care of God’s creation, including God’s creatures, and extinction due to human neglect or greed will cease!
