New York mayor Michael Bloomberg recently banned religious observance and prayer at the tenth-anniversary memorial ceremony of the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center. The decision has drawn some harsh comments.
Former deputy mayor of New York, Rudy Washington observed, “This is America, and to have a memorial service where there’s no prayer, this appears to be insanity to me… I feel like America has lost its way. I am very upset about it. This is crazy.” Popular televangelist and former presidential candidate, Pat Robertson, commented “It goes with the finest traditions of our nation that we memorialize bravery, courage, and sacrifice with appeal to the Author of life… I am frankly shocked that Mayor Bloomberg thinks that he is doing the city of New York a favor by eliminating the spiritual element at an event commemorating tragedy, grief, and heroic sacrifice.” In response to the criticism, Bloomberg’s office commented that the focus “remains on the families of the victims” (www.newsmax.com, August 25, 2011).
Millennia ago, God confronted Moses with the question: “How long will these people reject Me? And how long will they not believe Me, with all the signs which I have performed among them?” (Numbers 14:11). God warned ancient Israelites and their modern descendants, “If you do not obey Me, and do not observe all these commandments, and if you despise My statutes… I also will do this to you: I will even appoint terror over you…” (Leviticus 26:14-16). God “allowed” an act of terror to hit New York City ten years ago, yet the nation and its leaders continue to reject God. This same God clearly states that He will not be mocked (Galatians 6:7). What will it take for the nations God has so abundantly blessed to return to Him?
