Australia ablaze again!

Raging wildfires burning brush and farmland have broken out all across Australia and Tasmania, fed by widespread drought, high winds and months of record-breaking temperatures.

Emergency alerts about “catastrophic” fire conditions were posted in the heavily populated eastern and southeastern parts of Australia, where recent temperatures were “the highest since statistics began being kept in 1911” (New York Times, January 9, 2013). Reports say that firefighters have been pushed “to their limits and residents to their wits’ end” (ibid.).

The fires are the latest in a series of extreme weather-related calamities that have hit Australia in recent years.  In 2009, wildfires fanned by high winds killed 173 people and blackened thousands of acres.  In 2011, flooding and cyclones plagued the country on the heels of a decade-long drought (Wall Street Journal, January 8, 2013). 

What modern news sources fail to point out is that during this same period of time, Australia has attracted world attention with its income-generating “Gay Mardi Gras” celebrations while the Australian government plans to legalize same-sex marriages. Many residents of the “land down under” are unaware or don’t seem to care that God warned in the Scriptures that these behaviors are abominations in His sight (Leviticus 18:22), and nations that condone and promote these perverted activities will be punished with various plagues, including droughts and fire (Leviticus 26:14-22, 31-32; Deuteronomy 28:15-24, 34).
