The coalescence of science fiction and politics together is no longer such a dubious lineup. Take for instance the March 29 Newsmax piece written by former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Newt Gingrich and science fiction author William Forstchen: "Newt Gingrich: A Single Nuke Could Destroy America." Unfortunately this is NOT science fiction – it is far too real. The authors explain in this article that in the hands of nations such as Iran or North Korea, "…one small nuclear weapon, delivered by an ICBM can destroy the United States by maximizing the effect of the resultant electromagnetic pulse upon detonation."
This electromagnetic pulse (EMP) emitted from gamma rays is a side-effect of detonating an atomic weapon at high altitude in space. Strategically positioned explosions of one or more atomic weapons over the continental United States would ravage the power grid, transportation and communication networks, and all things electric, hurling our modern technological culture back to the Stone Age.
Possession of nuclear warheads and the capability to launch a communications satellite are the basic technology needed to deliver an EMP anywhere on the planet within minutes. Russia and China already have this capacity while other nations such as Iran and North Korea are suspected of developing it.
Gingrich and Forstchen write: "Within weeks after such an attack, tens of millions of Americans would perish. The impact has been likened to a nationwide Hurricane Katrina. Some studies estimate that 90 percent of all Americans might very well die in the year after such an attack as our transportation, food distribution, communications, public safety, law enforcement, and medical infrastructures collapse. We most likely would never recover from the blow."
WOW – this is shocking! Ninety percent mortality? And this comes weeks after the attack. The absence of basic human necessities coupled with little if any television or radio, no useable cell phones, no internet and no access to financial assets would trigger a climate of civil disorder of a magnitude never seen anywhere – ever! The destruction that follows might require martial law, or worse, foreign intervention, servitude and loss of national sovereignty.
Some leaders acknowledge the prospect of a world without the United States. Many recognize it as a potential unintended possibility as our government begins to dismantle itself by underfunding its own security in deference to economic bailouts.
Gingrich and Forstchen continue: "… the United States' reluctance to invest in a modern and credible traditional nuclear deterrent is a serious concern. What good will a bailout be if there is no longer a nation to bail out?"
These are frightening and sobering statements! Yet most fail to realize there is a higher power far superior to men whose immutable laws govern human conduct. Laws which if obeyed and followed generate peace, happiness, freedom and life…but if disobeyed produce hostilities, unhappiness, bondage and death. Our nation's future is set by its defiance of God's written code of conduct [the Ten Commandments] and its refusal to change the course of sin's destiny through real heartfelt repentance.
But to those willing to submit to correction, Jesus says, "As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent… To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne" (Rev 3:19, 21).
Scripture predicts a coming time of unprecedented great trouble that would erase humanity from the earth, except for the intervention and return of Jesus Christ as King of kings (Matt 24:21-22; Rev 19:16)! Will it begin with the launch of a nuclear electromagnetic pulse? Time will tell. But there is hope. You can be protected and you can be saved out of it.
